A Prayer for the Unconverted (2)

An old school prayer from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer that is definitely not politically correct.

O Merciful God, who hast made all men, and hatest nothing that thou hast made, nor wouldest the death of a sinner, but rather that he should be converted and live; Have mercy upon all Jews, Turks, Infidels, and Hereticks, and take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of thy Word; and so fetch them home, blessed Lord, to thy flock, that they may be saved among the remnant of the true Israelites, and be made one fold under one shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

Definition

  • Jews - The Jewish people who reject Jesus as Messiah and as the Son of God.
  • Turks - A referance to the Islamic Ottoman Empire and the religion of Islam they followed.
  • Infidels - One who rejects Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
  • Hereticks - Professing Christians or more correctly false Christians who teach or preach doctrines that contradict cardinal doctrines of the Faith (Trinity, Virgin Birth of Christ, Incarnation, Deity of Christ etc..)

A Prayer to be Prayed in Storms

O most glorious and gracious Lord God, who dwellest in heaven, but beholdest all things below: Look down,we beseech thee, and hear us, who are in peril; send thy word of command to rebuke the raging storm, and the roaring winds; that we, being delivered from this distress, may live to serve thee, and to glorify thy Name all the days of our life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (based on a prayer from the 1929 Scottish Book of Common Prayer)

A Prayer for the Unconverted

Burning In Hell  by Pennie Gibson   publicdomainpictures.net

Merciful God, creator of all the peoples of the earth and lover of souls: Have compassion on all who do not know you as you are revealed in your Son Jesus Christ; let your Gospel be preached with grace and power to those who have not heard it; turn the hearts of those who resist it; and bring home to your fold those who have gone astray; that there may be one flock under one shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. ~Book of Common Prayer

A Prayer for the United States of America

Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.  ~Book of Common Prayer

A Psalm for Hard Times

Psalm 88 is one of my favorite Psalms. It is the darkest Psalm in the Book of Psalms. Psalm 88 is a reminder that when you want to give up and your world has crashed all around you and you may even feel God has forsaken you, keep praying! This is a gritty and honest prayer that shows us that life is a struggle and is tough but keep calling out to God for answers even when you feel "darkness is your closest friend"

Evening Prayer: A Psalm of Sorrow and Grief - Psalm 80

Not all Psalms are Psalms of praise but some are Psalms of lament, sorrow and grief in times of trouble with faith in God. Are you going through a rough time? Cry out to God. Pray Psalm 80. Meditate on the words. Other Psalms of Lament are Psalm 42, 60, 74, 79 and 85.

A Prayer for Those Battling Addiction

O blessed Lord Jesus you ministered to all who came to you: Look
with compassion upon all who through addiction have lost
their health and freedom. Restore to them the assurance of
your unfailing mercy; remove from them the fears that beset
them; strengthen them in the work of their recovery; and to
those who care for them, give patient understanding and
persevering love. May they look to you for their Salvation and total satisfaction in life. Amen.

A Prayer of Forgiveness

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness;in your great compassion blot out my offenses.
Wash me through and through from my wickedness,
    and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions only too well,
    and my sin is ever before me.  - from Psalm 51

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One,
    have mercy upon me a sinner!

Assurance of Forgiveness
If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the perfect offering for our sins, and not for ours only, but for the sins of the whole world.    1 John 2:1-2

Night Prayer

The Lord Almighty grant us a peaceful night and a perfect end.
Amen.

Our help is in the Name of the Lord;
The maker of heaven and earth.

Confession

Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD.
Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.
 If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?
But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.
I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.
 My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning.
Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.
 And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.  - Psalm 130
[Confess your specific sins to God and ask for forgiveness]

Psalm 31

1
In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
deliver me in your righteousness.
2
Incline your ear to me;
make haste to deliver me.
3
Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe,
for you are my crag and my stronghold;
for the sake of your Name, lead me and guide me.
4
Take me out of the net that they have secretly set for me,
for you are my tower of strength.
5
Into your hands I commend my spirit,
for you have redeemed me,
O LORD, O God of truth.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Word

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.  - 1 John 2:1-2

The Jesus Prayer (Meditate on each word and Jesus mercy as you pray)

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner. ( pray 3 times)

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial,
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.

Collect

Lord, hear our prayer.
And let our cry come unto you.
[Pray in your own words whatever is on your heart]

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this life may rest in your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer

O God, your unfailing providence sustains the world we live in and the life we live: Watch over those, both night and day, who work while others sleep, and grant that we may never forget that our common life depends upon each other's toil; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Song of Simeon

Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.
Lord, you now have set your servant free
to go in peace as you have promised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior,
whom you have prepared for all the world to see:
A Light to enlighten the nations,
and the glory of your people Israel.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace.

Benediction

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

The almighty and merciful Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless us and keep us.
Amen.
