Morning Prayer
Almighty  God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, now and for ever. Amen.  - Book of Common Prayer

Midday Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, Seed of the Woman, crush the head of the wicked one who wages war against me this day. Give me grace to overcome his lies and temptations. This I ask in Your Holy Name I pray. Amen.

Evening Prayer
Father, You who love the world so much that You gave us Your only begotten Son for us sinners. Show us Your love this night and help us to never betray Your love. In the Name of the Word who became flesh, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit as One God, now and forever. Amen.

The Pain of Betrayal

Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.  - Psalm 41:9

I prayed Psalm 41 in Morning Prayer. In this Psalm, David speaks of being betrayed by a friend. This Psalm has it's ultimate fulfillment in our Lord Jesus Christ being betrayed by Judas.

I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. - John 13:18

Betrayal by a friend or finding out that a person you trusted and believed was your friend has betrayed you is painful. David spoke of his friend and adviser, Ahithophel  who join in Absalom's rebellion against him.  Jesus spoke of Judas Iscariot who He chose as an Apostle but betrayed Him for 30 pieces of silver.

If you have been betrayed in a friendship or in a relationship by someone you trusted, draw strength from the fact that God will not betray us.

  • Pray to the Lord to give your strength and not to hold a grudge or hate this person. Hate and seeking revenge will only make it worse.
  • Pray for God to help you to forgive the person.
  • Pray that God will bring the person to repentance.

Prayer   Lord God, have mercy and help us to overcome the pain of betrayal. Give us grace to forgive the one who betrayed us and help us to not to betray our Christian profession. In Jesus name I pray. Amen

Prayer and Predestination

1689 London Baptist Confession Chapter 5: Of Divine Providence

1. God the good Creator of all things, in his infinite power and wisdom doth uphold, direct, dispose, and govern all creatures and things, from the greatest even to the least, by his most wise and holy providence, to the end for the which they were created, according unto his infallible foreknowledge, and the free and immutable counsel of his own will; to the praise of the glory of his wisdom, power, justice, infinite goodness, and mercy.

( Hebrews 1:3; Job 38:11; Isaiah 46:10, 11; Psalms 135:6; Matthew 10:29-31; Ephesians 1:11 )
2. Although in relation to the foreknowledge and decree of God, the first cause, all things come to pass immutably and infallibly; so that there is not anything befalls any by chance, or without his providence; yet by the same providence he ordereth them to fall out according to the nature of second causes, either necessarily, freely, or contingently.
( Acts 2:23; Proverbs 16:33; Genesis 8:22 )

3. God, in his ordinary providence maketh use of means, yet is free to work without, above, and against them at his pleasure.
( Acts 27:31, 44; Isaiah 55:10, 11; Hosea 1:7; Romans 4:19-21; Daniel 3:27 )

Man's Great End (a Puritan prayer)

A Prayer from The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers.

Killing Your Pet Sins - by Thomas Brooks

A short but powerful video of the words of Thomas Brooks (1608-1680) an English Puritan preacher who writes on the need to mortify or kill your sin based on Paul's writing to the Colossians from Colossians 3:5

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:  - Colossians 3:5

Don't Let Prayer Become a Boring Empty Habit - by C. H. Spurgeon

This is part 1 of a sermon on prayer by C. H. Spurgeon.  The beginning text is Mark 11:24 which reads, "Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them." I found it very convicting because many times our prayer time can become a empty habit rather than a joy where we petition God by Faith.
